On Wednesday, May 28th, Gemini Personnel successfully held the 19th online version of the HR Executive Roundtable. More than 20 HR executives and industry practitioners gathered online to join the presentation and discussion on the topic “How to Maximize Outcomes Using Negotiation Techniques?”, delivered by Dee Oh.
Ms. Dee Oh is a seasoned executive coach and coaching teacher trainer, specializing in mindset, mental, emotional and physical realms. She founded a life coaching institute called Dee Dream Life in 2016 which holistically combines life coaching, physical fitness and emotional wellness. She was the Head of Executive Recruitment at Gemini Personnel and has investment banking experience from Asia, Australia and the US.
Dee’s keynote presentation shared strategies for effective negotiation, common pitfalls to avoid, and key noticeable differences between Western and Asian cultures, specifically Chinese culture. Negotiation is emphasized as an art that combines psychological warfare with verbal reasoning. The raising of awareness that negotiation occurs more commonly than what we tend to categorize as formal negotiations set the stage to engage the audience on how relatable this topic is for all, both in work and personal life.
Comprehensive preparation includes understanding one’s own and the counterparty’s current bargaining position, the bottom line of what is acceptable, and what is easy or difficult to concede. Dee emphasized embracing patience, using time-lapse, and maintaining a calm and flexible demeanor in effective negotiation.
In her presentation, Dee focused on achieving a win-win outcome by effectively communicating the benefits of an agreement to the counterparty in order to close the deal. By understanding the counterparty's pain points, we can highlight the advantages of reaching an agreement and the importance of meeting halfway, ensuring that all parties can benefit from the deal.
The presentation concluded by highlighting the key cultural differences in negotiation between Western and Asian settings. In Western contexts, it is important to be more direct and explicitly state the required terms and conditions. Conversely, in Asian settings, the ability to read between the lines and interpret non-verbal cues is crucial. This is because confrontations are often avoided, and parties may prefer to withhold their true feelings rather than address issues directly.
After the presentation, HR executives engaged in a breakout session to discuss various negotiation experiences and topics, primarily related to recruitment, layoffs, and employment contracts. Participants shared strategies for convincing candidates to join companies despite lower salaries compared to other opportunities. Others discussed the challenges of presenting lay-off and redundancy packages to emotionally charged employees, recommending techniques like mindfulness, breathwork, and suggesting breaks to help calm them before resuming negotiations. The session concluded with thought-provoking case studies on recruitment, leaving the audience eager for more in-depth discussions.

Dee Oh是一位资深高管教练和培训师,专注于心态、心理、情感和身体领域。她于2016年创立了Dee Dream Life生活教练研究所,曾担任Gemini Personnel高管招聘主管,还拥有亚洲、澳大利亚和美国的投资银行经验。
Dee的演讲分享了有效谈判的策略、应避免的常见陷阱,以及西方与亚洲(特别是中国)文化在谈判中的显著差异。她强调,谈判是一门结合心理战术和语言推理的艺术,且谈判在工作和生活中无处不在,远不止我们通常认为的正式场合。
她指出,全面准备包括了解自己和对方的谈判立场、可接受的底线,以及哪些内容容易或难以让步。有效的谈判需要保持耐心,利用时间差,并保持冷静灵活的态度。
Dee还强调,通过理解对方的痛点,有效传达协议的好处,可以促成双赢的结果。她指出,双方各退一步是确保各方都能从交易中获益的关键。
演讲最后指出,西方和亚洲在谈判中的文化差异显著。在西方,直接表达要求和条件很重要;而在亚洲,读懂弦外之音和非语言信号至关重要,因为人们往往回避冲突,不愿直接表达真实感受。
演讲结束后,HR高管们分组讨论了招聘、裁员和劳动合同等谈判主题,分享了如何在薪资较低的情况下吸引候选人,以及如何安抚情绪激动的员工等经验。讨论以一些招聘案例研究结束,引发了观众对深入讨论的兴趣。
